Ron and Hermione have hardly kept in contact and Dumbledore seemed to have forgotten all about him. Until Harry uses illegal magic to repel Dementors (Dementors, in Little Whinging?) and he gets expelled from Hogwarts. Then unexpelled.

Finally, after four long weeks of being almost cut-off from his best friends, Harry sees Ron and Hermione at Sirius' house: a dark mansion his godfather inherited from his parents, who were connected with a range of Death Eaters.

Ron and Hermione become Prefects, and so Harry returns to Hogwarts feeling somewhat rejected, and he begins his fifth year. There is a new Defence Against the Dark Arts Teacher: horrible Professor Umbridge. As fifth years take their OWLs, there is a lot of pressure to study magic, and Harry spends many nights revising homework ... or else in detention with Umbridge.
